Google Ads, CRO and SEO for HVAC and plumbing companies
Most jobs start with a call about something that just stopped working, so the sale turns on whether someone answers, and missed calls can lower your Local Services ranking.
We count booked jobs, not clicks.

Where the path leaks for HVAC and plumbing companies
What a free audit flags first, in the order your customer meets each step.
Fix-first list 6 issues
1The search ad
Found: One campaign pays for job seekers and DIY readers
Change: Separate repair, replacement and maintenance campaigns, with job and DIY searches blocked
Details
Where it leaks. One campaign bids on everything from “ac not blowing cold air” to “hvac technician jobs” and “how to relight a water heater,” so job seekers and DIY readers spend the budget, and a clogged drain and a whole-system replacement share one bid.
What we change. Separate campaigns for emergency repair, system replacement and maintenance, each with its own budget and landing page, and negative keywords for jobs, training, parts and how-to searches. Local Services Ads run alongside, set to the job types you actually take.
2The landing page
Found: Repair clicks land on a homepage that never says when a tech can come
Change: A repair page with tap-to-call and arrival windows up top, and a separate replacement page
Details
Where it leaks. Repair clicks land on a homepage that lists every service, with the phone number in small type and nothing about when a tech can come.
What we change. A repair page with a tap-to-call button and arrival windows on the first screen, and a separate replacement page that explains what sets the price and which financing terms apply, worded to meet federal disclosure rules for credit ads.
3The call or booking
Found: Calls ring a busy dispatcher, and no-heat calls at night hit voicemail
Change: Call ads only when someone answers, an answering service after hours, and message leads
Details
Where it leaks. Calls ring a dispatcher already on another line or a tech under a house, and after-hours calls go to voicemail, so a customer with no heat calls the next company. In Local Services Ads, Google says missed calls can lower your responsiveness, which feeds how you rank.
What we change. Call assets scheduled for the hours someone answers, an overflow line or answering service for the rest, and Local Services message and booking leads turned on for nights and weekends. Online booking asks for name, phone, address, the problem and a time window, and leaves the model number for the dispatcher.
4Replacement follow-up
Found: A new system gets quoted at the kitchen table, then nobody calls back
Change: A call, text and email on every open estimate, and a second option if price stalled it
Details
Where it leaks. A tech quotes a new system at the kitchen table, the homeowner wants to think it over, and nobody calls back, so a lead the ads paid for goes cold.
What we change. A follow-up schedule for every open estimate: a call and a text within days, an email that answers the usual questions on price, financing and install timing, and an offer of a second option if the first quote was the sticking point.
5Measurement
Found: Google scores calls by AI or length, not by whether they became a job
Change: Booked jobs sent from your job software to Google Ads, repairs and installs valued apart
Details
Where it leaks. Google Ads counts a call as a conversion when its AI judges the call qualified, or when it passes a length threshold if it can’t be recorded. Neither says whether the call became a job, so bidding chases callers who ask a price and never book.
What we change. Booked jobs and sold replacements imported from your job software into Google Ads, matched to the click within Google’s 90-day limit, with repair and replacement valued separately so bidding learns which searches pay.
6Maps and reviews
Found: Wrong service areas, year-old reviews and gift cards for five stars
Change: Service areas by city or ZIP, a no-reward review request after every job, and job photos
Details
Where it leaks. The Business Profile claims a service area the company doesn’t really cover, the newest review is a year old, and techs hand out gift cards for five-star reviews.
What we change. Service areas set by city or ZIP code, up to Google’s limit of 20, a review request sent to every customer after the job with no reward attached, and job photos posted from the areas you want more work in.
The rules your ads work within
What HVAC and plumbing companies can say, who the ads can reach and what a site can track.
Pre-launch check
Every ad, page and tag, before anything runs
State law
License numbers in ads, by state
Texas, California and Florida want license or certification numbers in ads; California bars work outside your license.
Details
In Texas, air conditioning and electrical contractors must put the license number in advertising that solicits work, and plumbing companies must show the Responsible Master Plumber’s license number in every ad, whatever the medium. California requires the license number in all forms of advertising, websites included, and bars ads for work outside your license classification, so an HVAC-only license can’t advertise panel upgrades. Florida requires air conditioning and plumbing contractors to show their certification or registration number in every advertisement.
Federal law
Financing offers trigger disclosures
“As low as $89 a month” in an ad means the APR, down payment and repayment terms must be stated too.
Details
Under the federal Truth in Lending rules, an ad that names a monthly payment, a number of payments or a down payment amount, such as “as low as $89 a month” or “60 months to pay,” must also state the APR, the down payment and the repayment terms, and that applies to a contractor promoting a lender’s plan, not only to lenders. On Meta, ads for credit offers belong in the Financial products and services Special Ad Category, which takes away age, gender and ZIP code targeting and lookalike audiences.
FTC and Google
Reviews and incentives
The FTC bans paying for positive reviews and Google bans any reward at all, so techs can’t hand out gift cards.
Details
The FTC’s rule on consumer reviews, in force since October 21, 2024, bans paying for reviews that have to be positive and requires a clear disclosure when employees review their own company, with civil penalties for knowing violations. Google goes further: its policy prohibits any incentive for a review, and asking only happy customers. A tech who offers a gift card for a five-star review breaks both.
Google
Local Services Ads screening
Techs you send to the house get background checks, and leads for job types or areas you don’t serve aren’t credited.
Details
Google treats HVAC, plumbing and electrical as urgent categories, and its screening for them adds background checks on the technicians who go to the house, not only the owner, on top of license and insurance checks. The Google Guaranteed badge and its money-back guarantee were retired in late 2025 in favor of a single Google Verified badge. Google no longer credits leads for job types or areas you don’t serve, so those settings have to match the work you take.
When demand moves
Budgets and campaigns change before each swing, not after the leads dry up.

When budgets and campaigns change
March to May: cooling tune-ups
Run tune-up and maintenance-plan ads while crews still have open slots
Details
ENERGY STAR tells homeowners to have the cooling system checked in spring, because contractors get busy once summer comes. This is the window for tune-up and maintenance-plan ads on Meta and in search, while crews still have open slots.
June to September: no-cool calls
Raise repair and Local Services bids, and show clear financing on the replacement page
Details
Repair budgets and Local Services bids go up with the heat, tune-up ads come down, and the replacement page carries clear financing terms for the homeowner deciding on the spot whether to fix an old system or replace it.
September to November: heating checks
Advertise furnace, heat pump and water heater checks before the first cold snap
Details
ENERGY STAR’s advice flips to the heating system in fall. Furnace and heat pump tune-ups, plus water heater checks before winter, fill the gap between cooling season and the first cold snap.
December to February: no heat and frozen pipes
Write frozen-pipe and no-heat ads ahead, and switch them on when a hard freeze is forecast
Details
The Red Cross lists pipes in attics, crawl spaces, garages and kitchen cabinets, and along poorly insulated outside walls, as the ones that freeze most. Frozen-pipe and no-heat ads should be written ahead and switched on when a hard freeze is in the forecast, not run all winter.
One team, five services
Each one set up for HVAC and plumbing companies, and built for the step after it.
Google Ads
Repair, replacement and maintenance campaigns, Local Services Ads for jobs you take, and call ads for staffed hours.
How we run Google AdsDetails
Separate campaigns for repair, replacement and maintenance, Local Services Ads for the job types you take, call assets scheduled to the hours your phones are covered, and license numbers in the ad copy where your state requires them. Call-only ads stop serving in February 2027, so any still running move to responsive search ads with call assets.
Meta ads
Planned work people don’t search for in a panic: spring AC tune-ups, fall furnace checks and maintenance plans.
How we run Meta adsDetails
Meta suits work people plan rather than search for in a panic: spring AC tune-ups, fall furnace checks, maintenance plans, water heater and panel replacements, shown in the ZIP codes you serve. Instant forms with an appointment request and Meta’s higher-intent review screen cut low-interest submissions, and ads built around financing go in the right Special Ad Category.
Conversion rate optimization
A repair page built for one hand, with tap-to-call and arrival windows, and a replacement page with financing terms.
How we do conversion workDetails
A repair page built for a phone held in one hand: tap to call, arrival windows, how pricing works. A replacement page that explains what sets the price, with financing terms that meet the disclosure rules, tested against the homepage with booked jobs as the score, not form fills.
Website design
A page for each job you want more of, from AC repair to water heaters and drains, plus a maintenance plan page.
How we design websitesDetails
A page for each job you want more of, such as AC repair, heat pump installs, water heaters, drain cleaning or panel upgrades, plus a maintenance plan page. If you sell plans online in California, the sign-up needs the consent, annual reminder and online cancellation the state’s automatic renewal law requires.
SEO
Service areas by city or ZIP code, a page for each trade, and a review request after every job with no reward attached.
How we do SEODetails
Business Profile service areas set by city or ZIP code, since Google doesn’t accept a radius, a page for each trade so “electrician” and “water heater repair” searches land on pages about them, and review requests after every job with no reward attached, since Google counts reviews toward local ranking.
What your report leads with

Questions from HVAC and plumbing companies
Ask us anything else at [email protected]. A founder replies within one business day.
Should I run Local Services Ads or regular Google search ads?
Usually both, for different jobs. Local Services Ads charge per lead rather than per click and show your Google Verified badge and reviews, but you choose job types and areas, not keywords, and people call or message you from Google instead of landing on your site. Search ads let you pick the searches, write the ad and send people to a page built for that job. We compare cost per booked job across the two and move budget to whichever wins for each job type.
Can we still advertise the federal heat pump tax credit?
Not for new installs. The Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit, which covered up to $2,000 a year toward a qualifying heat pump, doesn’t apply to equipment placed in service after December 31, 2025. Ads, pages and sales sheets that still mention it should come down. Utility and state rebates are separate programs, so check what your area offers before you advertise one.
We get plenty of calls but not many booked jobs. Is that an ads problem?
Sometimes. Listen to the calls first. Google Ads now records calls from ads by default in the US, after a short notice to the caller, and uses AI to judge which ones count as qualified. If the callers are real customers who don’t book, the fix is in answering, pricing or scheduling. If they’re job seekers, parts questions or people outside your area, the fix is in keywords and targeting. We sort a sample of calls into those groups before changing any bids.
Do you work with ServiceTitan, Housecall Pro or Jobber?
We work with whatever you book jobs in, including a shared spreadsheet. What we need is a way to get booked jobs and sold estimates back to the ads, with the date, the value and the customer’s phone or email. Google keeps the click ID for 90 days, and conversions matched on phone or email have to be uploaded within 63 days, so a weekly export is enough.
Do electricians fit the same way?
Mostly. Electrical work splits the same way into urgent repairs and planned jobs such as panel upgrades and EV charger installs, and Google screens electricians like HVAC and plumbing, with background checks on the people sent to the house. The license rules differ: Texas wants the electrical contractor’s TECL number in ads, and in California an HVAC or plumbing license doesn’t let you advertise electrical work without a C-10.
What does the free audit look at for an HVAC or plumbing company?
Your ads and Local Services profile, the pages they send people to, how calls and bookings are tracked, how estimates are followed up and how you show up in Maps and search. A founder records a 10- to 15-minute walkthrough and writes a one-page summary, delivered within 3 business days, with no call or login needed.
How is the work priced?
Ongoing work is one flat monthly fee, never a percentage of your ad spend, and it runs month to month. Website builds get a fixed quote in writing. After your audit, a written proposal with your fee in dollars follows within 2 business days of asking. How our pricing works.
